Mendeley has two types of platforms namely Web-based and Desktop-based. But, it requires users to sign up or register first before using this application. The benefit of having an account at Mendeley is that the data or paper that we put in Mendeley will be stored in the cloud. Here are the steps you need to do to install Mendeley:

Download and Install Mendeley

To download Mendeley, please visit Mendeley’s official website and select the Download menu. Log in to Mendeley Desktop

The first step that must be done before you can use Mendeley Desktop is to log in. Enter your email and password to start using Mendeley Desktop. The display of the Mendeley Desktop Login page shown in Figure 4.

Import File to Mendeley

If you skip this step and haven’t had the time to install the Microsoft Word plugin, you can follow these steps: Select Tools menu >> Install MS Word Plugin. For more information see Figure 9.

Method 1

Mendeley Download For Mac

This is the easiest method. I assume the Mendeley already installed on your computer. Then:​[1]​

1. Open Ms. Word, click File > Options > Add-Ins

Insert citation button missing

When installing the Mendeley word plugin, the Mendeley menu successfully appears in Microsoft Word. But when Microsoft Word was restarted, the Insert Citation button is missing. If you experience this, then you could try the following method:​[3]​

1. Click the File menu > Options
2. Select Trust Center > Trust Center Settings .
3. Select Enable all macros then click OK
4. Restart the Microsoft Word

If you are currently a Mendeley Desktop user, you will have already noticed that it comes with built-in plug-ins for Microsoft Word and OpenOffice Writer. These plug-ins are really useful for adding citations to your Word/Writer documents and build your bibliography dynamically.

Now, what if you happen to want to add a bibliography section in a document other than MS Word or OO Writer? No problem, we’ve got that covered! You have two options: copy & paste or drag & drop. Both alternatives are very similar.

First you open Mendeley Desktop and select the list of papers or references you would like to include in your bibliography (You can select as many references as you want). Use the normal multiple selection keys you would use to select multiple files in a folder elsewhere on your computer. In my case I’m a Windows/Linux user, so I press and hold the Ctrl key while I highlight the references I want to include.

Once you have all the desired references selected, you should pick which option you prefer: copy & paste or drag & drop.
